A1  1st and 2nd men cross over and change places with 1st and 2nd women. The latter taking hands and passing between the men. All turn and return to places in like manner.

A2  Same again men taking hands and passing between the women.

B1  1st couple down the middle and back again

B2  1st and 2nd couple swing and change places (progressive)

A1  1st woman and 2nd man, bow, turn single, then meet and turn each other

A2  1st man and 2nd woman do the same

B1 1st couple lead down the middle and back to places

B2  1st and 2nd couples swing and change places (progressive) 

Mr Chatworthy described "Over the water to [Charlie]" which is exactly the same as the Butterfly. He couldn't remember the tune.

Copied from an MS [manuscript] book which belonged to an old fiddler the father of Mr Clatworthy of Blue Anchor. May 5th 1914

A1  First 3 couples march [ ? ] and in a ring to places

A2  Partners bow, turn single and turn each other

B1 1st couple leads down the middle and back again

B2 1st and 2nd couples swing and change places (progressive)

When I had danced a few steps with him he remarked to me "We've turned round before both of us." When I sang the tune of the Soldier's Joy from his M.S. book quite easily he said "That's what I call knockng off the notes." He spoke of the vicar's wife at Exeter as Lady Warren and said he had danced with all the tip taps out that way.

 1st woman casts off and, followed by 1st man, passes between 3rd and 4th woman. Here 1st woman passes between 3rd man and casts up outside 2nd man to 1st man's place; while 1st man dances up the middle to 1st woman's place.

First man now casts off and, followed by 1st woman, does as 1st woman did in previous figure, 1st woman doing as 1st man did.

1st man and 1st woman lead down the middle and back again.

1st and 2nd couples swing and change places (progressive)

My Lady's Breast Knot

May 5th 1914

1st man and 1st woman go down the middle and pass between 2nd and 3rd woman.

Here 1st man goes up behind 2nd woman and passes into the middle where he meets his partner who has gone down behind 3rd woman, and then up the middle.

They then do similarly passing first between 2nd and 3rd men.

1st man and 1st woman then turn by the right, and then 1st man turns 2nd woman with the left while his partner turns 3rd man with the left.

They meet again in the middle ([1st couple] betwen 2nd man and 2nd woman) and turn each other with the right hand, whereupon 1st man turns 3rd woman, while his partner turns 2nd man with the left. (This is called "turning corners").

On meeting again 1st man leads 1st woman down the middle and left again. 

1st and 2nd couples swing and change places.

(Sometimes the lead down the middle and up again is omitted)
