                       Northants Poaching Song.

   

  It's I was bound a prentice in fair Northamptonshire

  I served my master truly for almost seven years

  Till I took up a poaching as you shall [quickly] hear

  Its my delight on a shiny night in the season of the year.

   

  Its me & my companions was setting of a snare

  The Game Keeper was a watching us for him we did not care

  For we can wrestle & fight my boys or jump or anywhere

  But its my delight on a shiny night in the season of the year

   

  As me & my companions was a setting by the five

  And in taking them up again we [laid] alive a hare

  We popped him into a bag my boys and thro [through] the wood did steer

  For its my delight on a shiny night in the season of the year

   

  We threw them over our shoulders & we wandered thro' [through] the town

  We called at a neighbour's house & sold it for a crown

  We called at a neighbour's house my boys but we did not say where

  Well here's success to poaching for I do think its fair

  Bad luck to every gamekeeper that will not sell his [deer]

  Hard luck to every gamekeeper that wants to buy a hare

                  The Drowned Sailor

  In Stow Bro, in Stow Bro, a damsel did dwell

  She loved her young sailor, he loved her as well

  He promised for to marry her when back he did return

  And mark what misfortunes all on him did [run]

   

  As they were a sailing a storm did arise

  the moon was overshaded and dismal was the skies

  The wind it blew a hurricane the billows loud did roar

  Which tossed these poor sailors all on a lee shore

   

  Some of those was single and some of those had wives

  And some of those poor sailors was swimming for their lives

  This poor unfortunate young man he happened to be there

  Instead of getting married he got a watery grave.

   

  From the top of Sto Bro this maid came unto the sands

  A tearing of her hair and a wringing of her hands

  Crying O you cruel billows come toss my love on shore

  That I may behold his sweet features once more

   

  As she was a going to Robin Hood's Bay she spied a drownded sailor

  She spied a drownded [sic] sailor all on the sands did lay

  She boldly stepped up to him and a maiden she did stand

  For she knew it was her own true love by the marks all on his hand

                                                         (or by the marks on his right hand)

  A thousand

  Crying O you cruel billows you have tossed my love on shore

  O happy & contented could I lay down by thy side

  And in a few moments after this fair maid she died

   

  In Robin Hood's Bay churchyard this couple there do lay

  And for a memorandum a stone at their heads do lay

  At all of you true lovers that should pass by this world

  I would have you shed a tear for this couple that lay here

   

  Sto Bro is evidently Stoupe Brow
