  The Constant Farmer's Son

  Its of a farmer's daughter so beautiful I'm told

  Here parents they presented five thousand pounds in gold

  There was a Lord who plead his word in vain

  In there was a farmer's son young Mary's heart ed [did?] gain

  Her brothers were opposed to this and for the Lord did plead

  And to oppose the farmer's son their utmost tried indeed

  He shall not wed our sister fair they to each other say

  We will betray and then we'll slay the Constant farmer's son

  A fair being held not far from town the brothers went [?]

  They asked young William's company with them to spend the day

  But mark when 'turning [returning] home that night they swore his life was [over]

  And with the stake the life did take of the constant farmer's son

  Their dark deed being accomplished they homeward went their way

  To meet their sister's anxious gaze and this to her did say

  Thy lover [fain] hath fallen in love and with some other one

  Pray think no more of yr [your] false one of your constant farmer's son

  As on her pillow Mary lay she had a dreadful dream

  She dreamed she saw his body lay down by a crystal stream

  Then she arose put on her clothes to seek her love did run

  When pale and cold she did behold her constant farmer's son

  Her dream she felt was realised as on his face she gazed

  She sat down by his body cold with [wonder] sore amazed

  She gathered leaves all from the trees to keep him from the sun

  One night and day she passed away with her constant farmer's son

  As hunger it came creepong on poor girl she sighed with woe

  To try and find his murderers out then homeward she did go

  Saying parents dear you soon shall hear a dreadful deed is done

  Down yonder vale lies cold and pale the constant farmer's son

  Up spake her older brother indeed it was not me

  Then up spake the younger one and he swore most bitterly

  Young Mary said don't turn so red nor try the deed to shun

  You've done the deed and you shall bleed for my constant faremer's son

  These murderers they soon owned their guilt and for the same did die

  Young Mary fair in deep despair she never ceased to cry

  Her parents they did fade away their glass of life was run

  Young Mary cried in sorrow [died] for her constant farmer's son
