  Helmsley Sword Dance

  4 April 1913

   

  Stephen Barton (51)
  30 years since he started dancing, 18 years since dancing ceased

  
  Six dancers, King & Queen, the King performing duties of the clown.

   

  Dancers, black trousers with red stripe, red [flannel] jackets, peaked in front and behind, no buttons (hooks & eyes)
  round red cap, with leather strap under chin.

   

  Iron swords about 3 feet to 3[ft] 2[inches], or 3.4 in length, ending at til thus [line drawing] Plain [wood/wound] handle.

  
  The Leader wore a stripe down his right arm.

   

  King had Busby hat, soldiers coat, black trousers with red stripe and carried a sword

   

  Queen dressed "just the same as a lady" bonnet, muff, skirt & jacket.

  
  Music Kettledrum and concertina (2 men). Two [lines/times] in back, Two others forgotten.
  Step a [sprung/spinning] bounding step very much like Handsworth.

  1 puts down sword over which 2,3,4,5 & 6 jumps & return to places, nos 2,3,& 5 turning to their right round no.1, no.4 to his left round no.6. No 6 jumps sword after no 5
  This repeated 5 times , nos 2,3,4,5 & 6 putting down sword.

  Same as last figure except that no 1 raises sword & makes an arch

  As usual spinning between each pass and at each end when neutral.

  2 jumps 1's sword & turns to his left round 3, no 1 follows him and both return to places,
  [Dont] in stationary position by each set of three.

  Shoulder Lock
  [Stand/Stance] facing c cl with left neighbours sword over right shoulder and own sword in right hand. Whole turn cl & Lock
  
  Raise
  Leader raises Lock in right hand all dance round c cl (8 bars) Then leader places lock on ground , and [gives] 3 claps after which all raise lock and dance round very fast, music quickening to end of phrase when all draw (8 bars)

  An alternative method to Raise as follows.
  
  Directly after 'your own sword' King enters ring and Lock is made round his neck . This ended dance
