- Five hundred miles from land, the Fanny Wright was wrecked in a storm. All that was saved was three bottles of wine. The survivors sustained themselves with these, at their weakest moments. On the 18th day, a Sunday, they realized one man must be sacrificed, one without a wife. They drew lots and O'Brien lost. The cook cut his throat and they drank the blood. On the Monday, they met a steamer and were taken to America.
