- While fox hunting on Leatherhead Common one evening, some hunters discover the body of a woman in the bushes. The next day the corpse is taken to an inn and a coroner's inquest is held. There are no mourners present when woman is burried in Leatherhead churchyard. [MN]

- Written soon after the events described by James Fairs, a brickmaker who lived not far from where the body was found (Gallacher 2013). Known only from a single oral version collected in 1897 in a different area of Surrey (Broadwood 1908 p. 121). Taken up by several singers in the postwar revival, most notably by Shirley Collins and the Albion Country Band on the album No Roses (1971) [MN].
